AI maturity in marketing: What the research reveals
AI maturity explains why 98% of marketing teams now use AI in some way, yet only 10% report transformational results, according to our 2026 State of AI in Marketing research. AI maturity measures how consistently a customer-facing team turns AI into measurable business outcomes, and it matters more than the number of tools or pilots you’ve launched.
So if your team has tools, pilots, and plenty of enthusiasm but can’t yet point to the revenue or customer experience gains, you’re not alone. Adoption is mostly solved, but the gap is impact — and closing it starts with knowing where you stand.
This guide defines the four AI maturity stages (Early, Emerging, Established, and Transformational), shows how to run an AI maturity assessment, and maps each stage to a next step with Loop Marketing. If you want the benchmarks first, download the 2026 State of AI in Marketing Report.

What is AI maturity for go-to-market teams?
AI maturity measures how consistently a go-to-market team turns AI into measurable business outcomes. For marketing, that means AI runs in documented workflows, draws on clean customer data, operates under human oversight, and ties to metrics like MQLs, customer acquisition cost (CAC), and revenue. Sales and service use the same definition with different workflows and metrics.
Maturity beats counting pilots because pilots measure activity and maturity measures repeatability. A team can run ten experiments and still sit at the bottom of the curve if none connect to the CRM, have an owner, or show a before-and-after result.
Marketing leads to other GTM functions, with 42% of marketers reporting advanced AI use (Established or Transformational), compared with 27% in sales and 23% in service. For those functions, see the sales maturity model and the customer success maturity model.
The Research Behind This Guide
- HubSpot’s 2026 State of AI in Marketing research: 1,754 marketers across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America. Stages are respondent-rated, so they show how teams describe their own maturity, not an audit of results.
- HubSpot’s cross-functional study: 6,000+ professionals found that 90% say their company uses AI and 6% rate it a “transformative” adopter. This is a different population than the marketing-only 98% and 10%, so don’t compare them directly.
- McKinsey’s 2026 State of AI survey: 1,719 participants in 97 countries, fielded May 4 to June 8, 2026, for an independent view of scaling and financial impact.
